Chickens are the “gateway animal” and a fabulous, accessible way to start your homestead adventure. In just 8-12 short weeks you absolutely can start putting meat you raised in your backyard on the table.

These classes will give you a hands-on opportunity to experience the ease of raising meat chickens from brooder to butcher in your own backyard.

The Pastured Poultry and Chicken Processing class

This full day (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) class will give the  to know you “can-do” this farm “gateway” animal.  If you want to produce the chicken your family eats, from roasted chicken to chicken nuggets and ground chicken (or turkey), this class will shorten your learning curve and save you time and money. From field to freezer, brooder to processing, you’ll walk through the process so you can go home and get started! 

In this hands-on, on farm class you will:

  • See various ways to start chicks and care for chicks in the brooder
  • Move chickens on the pasture and experience how to raise pastured poultry with ease
  • See exactly how our automatic watering system works
  • Process at least 2 chickens, including scald, pluck, eviscerate, processing of organs and cutting up the chicken
  • See how poultry fit into a whole farm regenerative system with a farm tour of Baker’s Green Acres
  • This hands-on, on farm class will also cover:
    • how to start your chicks and manage them as they grow,
    • managing diseases and predation
    • building a chicken tractor (mobile chicken pen).
    • how to butcher chickens, including using the whole chicken (feet, organs, etc.) and creating various cuts and pastured poultry products.
    • marketing and economics of pastured poultry

 The Chicken and Poultry Processing class

This half day class will give you hands on experience in taking your own chickens from the field to the freezer.  We’ll start at 9 am and by noon you’ll have picked up from the field and processed two chickens. This class will cover:

  • When your chickens are ready to harvest
  • Dispatching, scalding, and plucking chickens
  • Evisceration and cleaning chickens, including how to save and prepare the organs
  • Cutting the chickens into the pieces you use
  • Discussion on how to process turkeys and ducks
  • Discussion on marketing, selling, and the business end of the chicken process
